| Customer Reviews: You get what you pay for August 18, 2010 A. Geraci (Washington, DC) My review is similar to the others.
I purchase a lot of Opteka products because, lets face it, they're cheap.
PROS: The battery grip is GREAT. No issues what so ever. Yah, the buttons feel a bit cheap, but besides that it has full functionality and only cost 1/3 the price of the Canon version.
CONS: The batteries are... CRAP. Since they DON'T come with their own charger (and you can't use the canon charger) they are literally worthless. I checked to see if they still sell the separate charger for their (opteka) batteries and guess what... they don't --- which makes this Grip+Battery combo (again) completely worthless. Just buy the battery grip by itself and buy another brand of cheap batteries that comes with its own charger. Don't spend 20$ more on something (worthless batteries) that wont work.
Buy the grip. Ditch the bats.
(The grip IS worth it).
Doesn't hold batteries in place or keep connection with camera April 18, 2010 AlwaysWorking (Evergreen, Wa) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Some Opteka stuff is okay, this is not. There is no generic battery that the 5D reads, thank you Canon. So I knew that when I bought the Opteka. But the battery grip doesn't keep a solid connection with the camera, so one second I'm shooting away capturing a great moment, and the next my camera is dead, then it comes back on with the usual "Cannot communicate with this battery" and I have to stop and hit ok before I can continue. Sometimes it takes unscrewing the grip and rescrewing in or turning it off and on again before it works. Not cool when people are waiting on me. When I open the chamber door one batter is always loose, the little tab that is supposed to hold the battery in place doesn't do a very good job. The whole does feel cheap, it is. I would be fine with feels cheap if it worked, but it doesn't work, and it's compromised my work. I know the canon one is $240, which is a bit too much, but the Opteka model is not a good enough eplacement for the canon
Spend your money elsewhere April 14, 2010 D. Turin (Boston, MA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The battery grip itself is fine. The buttons do not have as nice a feel as the ones on the camera body, and the dial is hard to turn with one finger.
My major complaint is with the included batteries. The description does not mention that the batteries each come with a separate charger and will not be read by the camera (for remaining battery life). I even called the seller prior to ordering to find out if the camera would read the batteries, and I was told it would.
In my personal opinion, having two extra batteries and absolutely no way to determine the level of their charge is completely useless. I bought this because it was the same price as a single battery from Canon -- my advice is to just purchase the more expensive battery.
